Need (Finding Anna Book 2) Chapter 1

One month from today Need, the second book in my Finding Anna Series, will be released. I thought it fitting that today I give you a little preview of my newest book.

***WARNING***

This is the second book in a continuing series about the same characters. If you have not yet read Slave, Finding Anna Book 1, you will need to do so first before reading Need in order to understand what is going on in the story. Book 2 picks up where Slave ended.

Chapter One

Brianna
I stood, looking at myself in the mirror, the events of last night running through my head. It wouldn’t stop. I couldn’t believe what he’d told me. For nearly a year, I had lived my life as a slave, as someone else’s property. Now I . . . wasn’t?
“I didn’t buy you to own you. Not like you think I did.”
“If . . . if you didn’t want to . . . own me, then why did you . . . why would you buy me?”
“There are people out there who enjoy what Ian does. Alex, for example, but if you weren’t that type of person . . . well, I couldn’t just not do something. I had the means to help you. I couldn’t just walk away, and leave you there, if that wasn’t what you wanted.”
His next words rang in my ears as if he were standing right beside me saying them again. “I was selfish, though. When I brought you into my home, I knew that I wanted to keep you. Not as my slave, Brianna.”
He’d gone on to tell me that he wanted me as his submissive. I’d heard that word before, with some of Ian’s friends, but I didn’t know how it was different from being a slave. He’d said he was different from Ian, but the same. I had so many questions, and yet no idea where to begin.
What did it all mean? Was I no longer his?
I fingered the metal collar still in place around my neck. As he’d held me, I still felt like I was his. There, in his arms, no one could hurt me. I felt safe. Maybe that was stupid, but it was true. The moment I sat down in his lap, his arms came around me, and I instantly felt better. All the uncertainty no longer mattered because he was there.
Nothing could come and take that feeling away. Not even me. He caressed me ever so softly over my arms and back. Every now and then, I’d felt his lips graze my hair or my temple, but he said nothing and neither did I.
From the moment he began explaining to me why he’d bought me from Ian, I knew that I should be asking him questions and demanding answers, but again, I couldn’t. I had thought I would spend the rest of my life owned by someone, to be used and abused as they saw fit. And now . . . I was . . . not.
I clung to his shirt with my right hand while my left lay close to my side. Nothing had felt right in my life for the last eleven months. Not until this.
We’d sat there for a long time, neither speaking, with the television playing in the background. Eventually, Ma . . . Ste . . . Mast . . . he moved to turn it off.
He arose fluidly from his chair with me in his arms, and carried me to my bedroom. It had only made me hold on tighter.
He sat me gently on the bed and began to move away. I wouldn’t let go.
He pried my small fingers from his shirt. “I’m just going to get you a change of clothes, Brianna. I’ll be right back.” I wanted to beg him to stay, but I let him walk away.
Just as he’d promised, he was only gone for a minute. He returned with some clothes, but I didn’t pay much attention to what they were. Gently, he began undressing me.
His movements were unhurried. Never once did he try to do anything. He never had. I’d been in his home for more than a month, and yet he’d never had sex with me.
He scooped me up again in his warm arms and laid me down in my bed. My eyes found his as he hovered over me. They were filled with concern.
He brushed the hair away from my face. “I’ll just be in my room. If you need me or want to talk, come wake me.”
I didn’t respond to his request. He watched me for several more minutes before standing once again to his full height and turning to leave. Again, I wanted to ask him to stay, but I didn’t. Instead, I watched him leave.
I’d lain in bed for hours just thinking until I’d finally drifted off into a fitful sleep. I woke several times during the night. Once, I thought I’d seen him standing in the doorway, but I couldn’t be sure.
Light was streaming in through my bedroom windows, leaking into the bathroom through the open doorway as I continued to look in the mirror. It was after eight; I’d glanced at the clock before getting up. He would have already left for work by now. I had no idea what I was waiting for. The mirror held no answers.
Instead of going out into the main room as I usually did, I climbed back into bed. On my side, I pulled my knees up to my chest, hugging myself.
I was alone all the time when he went to work, but for some reason today it brought with it an overwhelming sense of . . . well, not exactly fear, but uncertainty. What was I supposed to do with myself? Did I get up and do what I always did? Was that what he wanted?
However, did that matter anymore? I mean, I wasn’t his slave. He’d said so himself.
I could be Anna again.
Anna.
I felt the moisture well up in my eyes and spill over. Who was Anna? Did she even exist anymore?
Suddenly, I felt comforting arms wrap around me. I thought I might have drifted off to sleep again until I heard his voice in my ear, his breath against my hair. He was here. Really, truly here.
I snuggled back against him, and he held me tighter. My tears ran freely down my cheeks, and he silently brushed them away until I drifted off to sleep again.
The next time I woke up the sun was higher in the sky, and I knew it had to be close to noon. I was alone in my bed again, but when I rolled over I saw him sitting in a chair just off to the side. He had a laptop resting on his legs, but looked up in response to my movement.
His eyes roamed my face as if searching for something. “Hi,” I squeaked. My throat was dry, probably from crying.
“Hello,” he replied in a steady, even voice. As if he knew what I was thinking, he picked up a glass of water that was on the nightstand beside my bed and handed it to me. I hadn’t even noticed it. “Drink.”
I brought the glass up to my lips and felt the liquid coat my dry throat. Only after the contents were completely gone did I lower the glass and look up at him again. His eyes were still on me. Watching.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
“You’re welcome,” he responded. “Are you feeling better?”
I nodded.
“Are you hungry?” he asked.
I hadn’t even thought of food until he mentioned it, but my stomach grumbled in response. He smiled. “I guess that answers my question.”
He arose from his chair and set his laptop aside. His hand reached out to me. “Join me?”
It was a question. He was asking me again. I was free to refuse.
My hand reached out and found his. He helped me up, and we walked in silence into the kitchen.
“Would you like breakfast or lunch?”
“Um,” I mumbled, looking down out of habit. His finger came up under my chin, making me look at him. He didn’t say anything, just quirked an eyebrow. “Breakfast?” I said as more of a question than an answer.
He nodded and motioned for me to take a seat at the island. I slid onto the stool without comment. It had been a while since we’d eaten at the island. We usually ate breakfast together at the table. The change made me slightly nervous.
I watched as he made ham and cheese omelet for us, just as he had over a month ago. The differences between then and now struck me. Then, I had been worried about what was expected of me by my new Master. Now, I was just as concerned over what to expect, but for very different reasons.
After splitting the large omelet onto two plates, he set one in front of me, and placed the other to my left before coming around to sit down. He was silent as he ate, only glancing up at me once when he noticed I hadn’t started eating immediately.
I was almost finished when he said, “Tell me what you’re thinking, Brianna.”
My fork stopped midway to my mouth. This was it.
I laid my fork down and placed my hands in my lap. “I’m wondering . . . what happens now?” I said without confidence.
“What do you want to happen now?” he asked.
I clenched my hands into fists in frustration. “I don’t know,” I said somewhere between a sigh and a sob.
His right hand covered both of mine before he spoke again. “This decision is yours, Brianna. I can’t make it for you.”
“I know, Mas—” Was I supposed to call him Master? Did he want me to?
He sighed. “Maybe we should start with names.”
“Names?” I asked, bringing my head up to look at him hesitantly.
“Yes,” he said more confidently. “You may call me Stephan, or Sir, if you prefer.”
I knew my eyes were wide with shock. He was giving me permission to call him by his given name.
“Also, I was curious as to which name you prefer?”
“You know my name,” I whispered.
He nodded. “This is true.” He paused as if thinking through something. Then, seeming to finish his thought, he began talking again as if he hadn’t stopped. “When I purchased you from Ian, he told me your name was Brianna Reeves. He called you Brianna, and you’ve never said any different or given me any reason to think you preferred to be addressed in any other way.”
Now I was more confused. If he knew my name was Brianna, what was he getting at?
I didn’t have to wait long. “I had a meeting with Brad this past week to see how things were going with your workout routine. He called you Anna,” he said, searching my face for a reaction. He got one. I sucked in a breath at hearing the name my family and friends had called me before this nightmare began.
Brad did call me that, but for some reason it was different. Hearing him . . . Stephan . . . say my name again brought back the memory of the phone call with my father that Saturday afternoon when he told me that a car would be picking me up. I felt my heart rate pick up along with my breathing, but I was okay. I was okay.
“I was called Anna. Before,” I whispered, knowing he’d hear me.
He waited until I looked at him again before asking in that calming voice of his, “Do you wish to be called Anna?”
I didn’t know how to answer him because I truly didn’t know. I wasn’t sure I was that girl anymore, or if I ever could be again. “I don’t . . . know?” Again, it came out sounding like a question.
He nodded again. “All right. We’ll stick to Brianna for now.”
Without another word, he slid from his seat and went to the sink with his plate. After rinsing it off and putting it in the dishwasher, he turned back to me. “You should finish your breakfast. I need to get some work done, but I’d like to talk again in a few hours.”
“Okay,” I answered without emotion.
His face dropped a little, but he quickly recovered. “I’m going to get my laptop from your room, and then I’ll be upstairs in the library if you need me.”
He paused to watch me for a minute and then walked out of the room, leaving me to finish my omelet.

Stephan
At least she was still talking. That was good.
After her restless night, I’d been concerned that she’d completely retreat into her shell. Although she hadn’t woken up screaming as she had those first few nights, she’d rarely stopped moving. Her arms, legs, and head had thrashed about causing the sheets and blankets to bunch and tangle in her limbs. Moans, both loud and soft, were constant visitors until the sun had started to rise in the sky.
I retrieved my laptop from the chair in her room and headed upstairs. She was still in the kitchen when I passed by, eating—or rather picking at—what was left of her food. The urge to go to her was strong, but I knew that I couldn’t. I wanted her to have time to gather her thoughts before we talked later, and that was something she needed to do without me hovering.
It was hard to concentrate on work, but somehow, I managed to get through the e-mails that needed my attention. The clock read three thirty by the time I was finished, and Brianna had yet to come upstairs. I’d heard her moving around downstairs, but not enough for me to decipher what she could be doing.
Figuring I needed a little moral support, I called Logan’s number. Thankfully, he picked up on the third ring. After the pleasantries were out of the way, he got down to business and asked me how the talk with Brianna went.
“She’s got more strength than she gives herself credit for,” he said once I’d brought him up to date on both our conversations last night and the one this morning.
“Yes, she does. I wish she would trust me more. There are still so many things that she keeps to herself.”
“Have you told her that?”
“What? Well, of course . . .” The more I thought about it, the more I realized that although I had told Brianna she could talk to me, told her that she could trust me, I had always tried to keep my feelings and wants under control. Maybe Logan was right and I needed to tell her specifically what I wanted from her. She hadn’t reacted badly when I’d told her I wanted her to stay last night. It might not be so bad.
“Thank you, Logan.”
“What are friends for?” he said, and I could hear his amusement through the phone.
“There is one more thing. If Brianna decides to consider becoming my submissive—”
“She should talk to Lily,” he said, before I could finish my sentence.
“Yes. I can answer her questions, but I think it would help having another submissive to talk with.” I paused, and then added, “I don’t know if I could handle it if she agreed, and then rejected me.”
“You need to be prepared, Stephan. She may not want what you want, or like what you do.”
I ran my hand through my hair in frustration. “I know that, Logan,” I said through gritted teeth. “Do you think I don’t know that?” Realizing I was raising my voice, I took a deep breath to calm myself down. “I know. Believe me, I know. I just . . .” I couldn’t explain it other than to say, “She’s different.”
He didn’t say anything for a long time. I knew he was weighing his response. Finally, he spoke. “I know this is different for you, Stephan, but you can’t allow that to color your judgment or influence her. She has to want this or it won’t work. Not for the long term anyway. And I know you well enough to know that is what you want.”
Now it was my turn not to say anything. Logan knew me better than anyone else did. He’d stuck by me during my rebellious teenage years, and kept me out of the kind of trouble that would have ended up with me in Juvenile Hall. We’d experienced so many firsts together in our adolescence. I trusted him. He trusted me. Time and life experience had done nothing but strengthen that.
By the time I hung up with Logan, it was after four and I could hear Brianna moving around in the kitchen. I smiled to myself. She’d be starting dinner for us.
I decided to give her a little more uninterrupted time and called my assistant, Jamie. She assured me that although Karl Walker, the foundation’s CFO, had been looking for me, it didn’t appear to be urgent. Missing work was not something I liked to do, but I hadn’t wanted to leave her alone today.
After hanging up with Jamie, I closed down my computer and opened the lower left drawer of my desk. There in the back was what I had been looking for: an empty journal.
As I walked back downstairs, the sounds in the kitchen got louder and then suddenly stopped. When I rounded the corner, Brianna was standing frozen in the center of my kitchen.
I walked over to her. “Is everything all right?”
She nodded.
“Brianna, please talk to me. Why are you standing in the middle of the kitchen? Do you need something?”
Again she didn’t speak, just shook her head no.
This time, I reached out and brought her head up. Her eyes held uncertainty again. “Tell me.”
“I don’t . . . know what to do.”
“About?”
She pressed her lips tightly together, and I was beginning to get frustrated. I tried very hard to remember what Logan had said just before hanging up with me:
“Whatever you do, Stephan, don’t lose your temper with her.”
I took a deep breath and refocused on her. She shifted her feet several times before she said, “I don’t know what you want me to do. How you want me to . . . act.”
“How do you want to act?”
That was when the tears started. I knew she was confused. This could not be easy for her. She had just begun to accept that she belonged to me, and now I had once again destroyed her reality. I only hoped she would let me help her build a new and better one.
I brushed the tears from her cheeks with my thumbs and stepped forward to bring us closer together. She took the invitation and laid her head on my chest. I wrapped my arms around her and rubbed my lips against her hair. “You can tell me anything, Brianna. Anything. I don’t want you to keep things to yourself. I want you to trust me.”
She nodded against my chest.
I noticed there was water boiling on the stove, so I reached over and turned the burner off. She started to step away and apologize, but I pulled her back against me. “No. Dinner will wait. I think we need to talk first.”
Brianna nodded and stayed close to my side as I led us to the living room. I walked to my chair and sat down, holding my hand out in offering to her. She placed her fingers in my grasp and lowered herself onto my lap.
Once she was settled and my arms were around her, I said, “Now, tell me what is bothering you.”
She took several minutes to answer, but finally said, “I don’t know how I’m supposed to act . . . what I’m supposed to do now.”
I took a deep breath and said, “Let’s start with the first one, shall we?”
Her face was full of anxiety, but she nodded.
“This is my house, so I expect you to treat me and my things with respect. You are free to come and go. If you aren’t going to be home when I am, then I expect you to either call me or leave a note. My bedroom is still off limits to you unless I give you permission to go in there. I would still like for you to continue working with Brad. I think it will help you not only physically, but mentally as well. It doesn't matter what you decide to do, but it is your decision. You may stop if you wish.”
I let that set in for a minute before I continued. “As I told you last night, I’d still like to see you go back to school. Again, it will be a benefit to you no matter what path you end up choosing.” Pausing, I made sure she was looking at me before calmly saying, “Everything else is up to you.”
She just watched me, not saying anything for two hundred and four seconds. Then she said, “So, if I decide I don’t . . . want to stay?”
I felt a deep pain in my chest unlike any I’d ever known. It took me a few seconds to find my voice. “I won’t stop you.”
Brianna didn’t respond. Her eyes roamed my face and then fell to her lap. Once again, she pressed her lips together.
I decided to take Logan’s advice and tell her exactly what I wanted. “I would like for you to stay. How do you feel about that?”
She shifted on my lap a little. “Scared.”
“Why do you feel scared?”
“You want me to be your . . . submissive,” she whispered.
“Yes,” I answered.
“I don’t,” she said, and then stopped herself. “What would I have to do?”
The fact that she didn’t say no outright gave me some hope. I smiled, tucked her hair behind her ear with one hand, and reached over to retrieve the new journal with the other. Her fingers touched it reverently when I placed it in her lap. “This is a journal. It’s yours. I’d like for you to put your thoughts and feelings down in it every day.”
She opened it, flipping through the blank pages. “I used to have a journal when I was with my mom,” she said absently. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
I waited until she closed the book and cradled it to her chest. Brianna seemed very pleased with her new journal. “We need to communicate. I need to know what you are thinking and feeling, Brianna. I want to help you so that you’re not afraid anymore, but you have to help me. You have to talk to me. Will you do that?”
“Yes.”
I cupped her face with both of my hands. “You don’t have to make any decisions right now, Brianna. I won’t force you into this. It has to be your choice.”
She closed her eyes briefly. When they opened again, they were glistening, and a single tear fell down her cheek. My mouth opened and pressed against her skin, capturing the moisture. The salty taste lingered on my tongue.
Brianna’s lips parted as she sucked in a deep breath. My senses registered her reaction, and I felt the pull I had felt so many times before. Tilting her face up with the pads of my thumbs, I moved my lips down to within a breath of her own. “I want to kiss you, Brianna.”
She didn’t answer me so I remained where I was. She tilted her head, bringing her mouth closer to mine almost unconsciously.
“Do you want me to kiss you?” I whispered.
“Yes,” she said, her breath ghosting across my lips.
A second after the word left her mouth my lips were covering hers. My fingers wrapped around her scalp, moving her head to give me the best access. Her lips parted and I took advantage.
The taste of her against my tongue drove me on. Ever so slowly, I explored every inch of her mouth. The mouth of the woman I hoped to one day make completely and solely mine.
Brianna’s hands came up to rest lightly on my chest. My hands increased their grip on her hair as I pulled back enough to say, “Touch me,” before going back to my delicious exploration.
Slowly her hands moved up my torso to my neck. Feeling her touch my bare skin sent a shiver down my spine, and I pulled her closer. I wanted to devour her.
My body shifted and I put my left hand on her waist, pressing her closer. She was too desirable for her own good.
I forced myself to push her away. My forehead rested against hers as our harsh breath mingled together. Her expressive blue eyes fluttered open. For a moment, they weren’t afraid. Then, I saw it again as she registered the want I knew was reflected in my own eyes.
With great reluctance, I leaned back and cleared my face of my desire. “I have one more request,” I said once I’d regained my voice.
“What?” she asked, still not fully in control of herself.
“I want you to talk to Lily.”

Audio Books?

About a month ago on my Facebook page, I asked a question to my followers about audio books. Do you listen to them? Why or why not?

The overwhelming reason I got back for people not listening to audio books was that the narrators were annoying. I knew exactly what they meant! I've listened to several audio books over the years, sometimes its nice to have a good distraction while driving long distances, and I've encountered some very bad audio recordings. Some were so annoying that they pulled me out of the story.

This is why, when I was told that Slave was going to be turned into an audio book that I was grateful I was given a say in who the narrators would be. I got to listen to the male and female voices this past weekend, and make my recommendation. It was a fun process, but I will admit it was a little strange hearing the words I'd written being read out loud.

The woman who will be reading Brianna's part is a little older than what I would have liked, however, when I heard her reading Brianna's POV I felt she nailed her helpless vulnerability in Slave. Her reading was so full of emotion that she pulled me right into the story. The man reading Stephan's POV also had that tone that drew me in.

They are supposed to start work on recording Slave this week. I don't have a tentative date for it's release yet. When I find out, I'll let you all know. I'm really looking forward to hearing the final recording.

The End Is In Sight!

This is going to be another update post, but for those of you who are waiting on pins and needles for Need: Finding Anna Book 2 you should like this one. I'm almost finished; at least with the writing part of the book. It's currently sitting at just over 76,000 words and I now know there will be one more chapter plus the epilogue. Who knows, I might even meet my January 25th deadline. (did you catch that that's tomorrow?)

One of the things I love about writing is that I'm along for the ride as much as my readers. Brianna threw me some curve balls in this book, but so did Stephan. He opened up more than I ever thought he would. You're going to learn more about Brianna as well as Stephan in this one.

The book is still currently scheduled for release in July. I'll have more details about that as the time draws closer. There is a lot of editing I have to do between now and then.

On a side note, my 3rd novel, Behind Closed Doors releases in 16 days (February 9th). To get more information about that book, go to www.thewriterscoffeeshop.com/publishinghouse or to my main blog www.sherri-hayes.blogspot.com.

I hope to get posts back on track starting next week. Thank you everyone for your support!

Revisiting Old Friends

If you're following me on my other blog, www.sherri-hayes.blogspot.com, then you already know that I've been hard at work again on Book 2 in my Finding Anna series while I wait for the second round of edits to come back to me from my editor for Behind Closed Doors.

This past weekend, I spent most of my time with Stephan and Brianna. The first eleven chapters are written and tweaked.

It was great spending so much time with these two again. I love the connection they have, and the way they relate to each other.

One of the things I've found in people not understanding BDSM comes in relation to the D/s. Many can't understand why someone would willingly give up control to another. What does the submissive get out of it?

If we take this question and apply it to Brianna, we find that she, in fact, gets a lot. In Slave, Stephan provides her with a safe place to live. He is her protector. Her shoulder to lean on. He makes sure her needs are taken care of while helping her to grow emotionally in an environment where she doesn't feel threatened. Isn't this what most Doms provide for their submissives?

Guest Post and Giveaway - Scorching Book Reviews

Yesterday had to be one of the best days I've had as an author to date. It ranks right up there with getting my first novel in my hands.

It started with a radio interview on The Hollis Chapman Show. If you haven't gotten a chance to listen to it, it is available on the show's site archive. The interview went really well, and I was able to share some of my tips on writing and marketing with listeners.

Then, last night, Scorching Book Reviews posted what can only be described as an amazing review of Slave. The review was so wonderful I was nearly in tears reading it. According to the reviewer, Slave is 'one of the best books I've ever read and I can't wait to read more'.

In conjunction with the review, I also wrote a guest blog post on her site telling why I chose to write Finding Anna. There is also an ebook give away attached to the post, so if you haven't read Slave yet or know someone who might be interested in reading it, hop over to Scorching Book Reviews and leave a comment for a chance to win a free copy.

Reader Question - Why...?

*Spoiler Warning* If you haven't read Slave yet, read the below at your own risk.

My readers have been rather quiet lately with questions, but as I was scanning through reviews on Amazon I found a comment listed under one of the reviews. The reader posed a question and although I doubt they will ever make it here to see the answer, I thought it was a perfect topic for this week's blog post.

I am about 35%+ through the book and I had put it down. At the part where he takes her books away. I don't feel this is about a submissive woman, but an abused, broken girl. GIRL. She was a minor when Ian acquired her, for god's sake. I keep asking myself, why didn't Logan and Stephan rescue her, take her to a hospital, and turn that jackass Ian over to authorities? I love well written BDSM (about adults!), but I just can't get past the fact that I don't see her as an adult. I makes me squirm. Comments?

Let me start by saying that this reader isn't the first to pose this question. I knew when I started this story that some would not like it because it doesn't follow the 'traditional'.

The reader's main issue here seems to be that they view Brianna as a girl, one not old enough to make such decisions about her life. But what I've found through talking to many Dominants and submissives is that most knew that they had this inclination between the ages of 16 and 25. You may not feel that an 18 year old is capable, but I know many that would disagree. I am not disregarding the fact that Brianna was 17 when Ian got hold of her, or that she was there against her will. If you've read the book, you know this is spelled out clearly. That does not appear to be what the reader is addressing.

The second part of this reader's question has to do with why didn't Logan and Stephan take Brianna to the hospital and turn Ian over to the authorities. First, this is a series of books and we do not know what will happen with or to Ian at this point. As for the first part of the question, the simple answer is that I didn't want it to happen that way. lol. The reasoning behind it, however, is pretty simple. Stephan lives a fairly high profile life, which we will get a little glimpse of in Book 2. Think about what the media can do with information. Do you think they would have left it at him being the hero and rescuing a girl from an evil man? Doubtful. They would have wanted to know why? What made this girl special? How did he find out about her? It is possible that they would have dug far enough to find out about him being a Dominant. How would that have affected his life, his family, his business? These are chances that Stephan was not willing to take.

So, I throw the ball in your court readers. What do you think of what the reader said? Do you agree? Disagree?

'Real' BDSM

Today I find myself in the mood for a little rant. lol.

While doing research and exploring the BDSM community, you see a lot of comments about being a 'true submissive' or a 'true dominant'. If you talk to those who've been in the lifestyle for any length of time, however, you will find that they hate those terms. There is no such thing. You either are a submissive, or you're not. You either are a dominant, or you're not. Just because you don't submit to every dominant personality, or Dom everyone around you, doesn't make you any less of what you are.

The same holds true with BDSM. I've found many, especially those outside of the lifestyle, who feel that if pain or bondage is not involved then it isn't BDSM. That just is not the case.

First, let's define BDSM. Bondage & Discipline. Domination & submission. Sadism & Masochism.

What do these terms mean and why are they broken down? Because anyone of these things, or combination there of, fall under BDSM. A person does not have to enjoy pain. They don't have to like being tied up either. There are also those who want to be tied up and flogged, but have no desire to be dominated in any way. Fetishes take all different forms, and they all fall under the BDSM heading.

There is not 'real' BDSM. Wants and needs in a relationship are what you make of them.

So what does this have to do with anything you might ask? Where is the rant? Something I've noticed in a few reviews Slave has received is the disregard or the lessening of the BDSM element in the story. There is no impact play, pain, or bondage in Slave. There is, however, a clear domination and submission dynamic. This is BDSM. Yes, it is a milder form than seems to find its way into many BDSM novels, but it IS BDSM none the less.

Slave has gotten some really great reviews, and I'm grateful to everyone who has taken the time to do so. However, I'd like your opinion. How do you feel about it? Should a novel be deemed 'less than' because it lacks what is the norm in the mainstream?

Reader Question - Inspiration

This week I'm answering another readers question via formspring. If you have a question for me or one of my characters, hop over to formspring or leave it here.

Question from trilby97:
What inspired you to write this story; the BDSM path and freeing someone from it?

Great question, trilby97.

This story was an evolution of sorts. I'd been reading some BDSM stories on-line. That alone didn't really trigger the story making juices so to speak, but then a story about a young girl that had been kidnapped and enslaved for years flooded the news. With that came 'in depth' stories of human trafficking, etc.

One day my mind just started to mingle the two. I began to wonder how a Dom would go about helping a woman who'd been enslaved against her will without using traditional means.

The story rattled around in my head for about a month before anything ended up on paper. But even then, I was too nervous to put it out there, so I sent the first four chapters to a friend. She read them and begged me for more.

As they say, the rest is history. I continued writing the story until it became what it is today. Stephan and Brianna have taken on a life of their own, and I can't wait to continue to share their journey with all of you.

Book 2

With Slave finally in the hands of readers, I've had quite a few questions regarding the next book. I thought this would be a good time to answer them. :)

The most common question I get is when will the next book be out. I know that I'm an indie author, but I'm going traditional on this. One book in this series will be released per year until it's done. So unfortunately, that means that book 2 will be available next year sometime in the summer months. I don't have an exact release date from my publisher yet.

Have you started writing the second book yet?
Yes, I have. Roughly a quarter of the second book is written, although it is in draft form and is subject to any number of changes that flutter through my mind between now and when I hand it off to my editor.

What can you tell us about book 2?
lol. Not much. I don't write from an outline as many authors do, so a lot of my writing is a surprise to me until just before it finds its way on paper. I know where the book will start and where it will end. I know some of the basic themes that will be in there...but that's about it.

Does book 2 have a title, yet?
No, it doesn't. I've been throwing some ideas around, but so far nothing had really hit me as feeling right yet. When I thought of the title for the first book, Slave, it just settled in and felt right. I'm sort of a 'know it when I see' it type of a girl. ;)

Why was Slave listed as erotica when it is more of a romance?
What does this have to do with book 2, you may wonder? Everything! lol. My publisher is listing the 'series' as erotica, not the individual book. It wouldn't have been fair to list Slave as romance and then all the additional books in the series as erotica. And yes, I do think that book 2 will earn the erotica rating. Things should be heating up a little between Stephan and Brianna in the next one.

Hopefully this answered some questions out there. Remember if you have questions for me, Stephan, or Brianna, click on the Formspring link in the left column and leave me a question.

Reader Question

For this week's blog post, I'm answering another question posted on Formspring. If you haven't read Slave yet, proceed with caution. Both the question and answer this week contains spoilers.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Was the decision to not have Ian illicit orgasms from Brianna as part of his kink a conscious decision?

Thank you IslandWoman for the question.

When I began thinking about the world Brianna was coming from, the one in which she lived in Ian, I saw it as one full of strict rules. From Brianna's point of view we learn that she never lived up to Ian's standards enough to earn a warm shower. No matter Ian's sadistic tendencies, he is a Master and he lives by the philosophy of reward and punishment. Orgasms, for him, fall into that category. Brianna never earned them, therefore, he never pushed that upon her.

So, yes, it was a conscious decision. Even though Ian obviously has a different set of moral guidelines he lives by, he, just like all Master's, love their rules. It is one of the reasons they are what they are.

The Play Room - Rattan Cane

Before we get to the topic of today's blog post, I want to thank everyone who has left a review for Slave. Every review on Goodreads, Amazon, etc. helps to spread the word and let others know if the book is worth their investment.
I have been trying to compile the reviews together until the 'Reviews' page here on the blog. If you know of one that is not listed, please let me know and I will try to get it posted.

Also, I hope you will come join me this Friday over at Mindreaders where I will be doing a guest blog post for her August Adults Ahoy series on modern day slavery.

Now. On with today's post. :)

In Slave, we see Stephan improvising with the materials at hand to make a make shift cane to help walk Brianna through her past.

Canes come in many different materials. This one is made of rattan, which is similar to bamboo. Because it is made of a natural product, there are often minor variations from one cane to another.

I was lucky enough to have a friend send me a video demonstration regarding the use of a cane in BDSM. It isn't a piece of equipment one wants to just pick up and start using on a whim. Using a cane in an incorrect manner can cause a lot of damage to ones partner. It is also very easy to break a cane if you are using it improperly.

One of the things that struck me in the video is that it does not take a lot of force when using a cane to get results. Often when those outside of the lifestyle think of canning they think of someone being punished, left with huge welts on their body. Can that happen? Of course. But as with most everything, the end result depends largely on the person behind the equipment. Using a cane on a specific area will increase the sensitivity of that area, which can lead to more enjoyment for both Dominant and submissive alike.

Slave, Mind Reader, and Blog Hop

I thought this was a perfect opportunity to sum up everything that has been going on and what I have planned.

Slave Released!

This past Thursday Slave was released by my publisher, The Writer's Coffee Shop Publishing House. I was lucky enough to receive my copy in the mail that afternoon.

TWCS Publishing House hosted a virtual release party for the four authors whose books released this past week. It was a great time, and we had a steady stream of people in and out of the chat throughout the day.

If you've never been to one of TWCS' release parties, you are missing out. Several of the publishing house authors usually stop by even if they do not have releases that month. It's a great way to have a relaxing conversation with the authors, ask questions about their books, and find out what's coming up at the publishing house. The authors also share teasers from their newly released books. Readers can get a taste of the authors and maybe find a new book they never considered picking up before.

Mind Readers

On August 19th, I will be over at the Mind Readers Blog doing a guest blog post for her Adults Ahoy series. The topic will be 'Modern Day Slavery'. A series topic to be sure, I'll be touching on both consensual and non consensual slavery today. Hopefully you will all stop by and not only check out my blog post, but also the other guest bloggers that will be participating throughout the month.
Blog Hop

With Slave's release, my marketing manager will be orginizing a blog hop in the near future. If you have a book blog, or you know of a blogger who might be interested in reviewing Slave, interviewing mem for their blog, or having me as a guest blogger, leave a comment with your e-mail and I will forward it on.

Reviews for Slave

Another Formspring question from a reader.

I just got the book and I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to tell you what they think of it once it's done. Could you post a place in the blog for us readers to do that?

So if you have a review of the novel you would like to share, please post it here in the comment section. I'm going to add a 'Reviews' page to the top and list them there to make it easier for people to find and read.

Slave, Chapter 1

Stephan

Geno’s was a small Italian restaurant about a mile from my office. They had good food and a cozy atmosphere, which made it a great place to have an informal meeting with an old friend.

The hostess greeted me at the door and let me know that my party had already been seated. She escorted me through a maze of tables to a corner booth in the back.

The restaurant was busy, but not packed. Still, getting the back corner booth with no one sitting at any of the immediate tables surrounding it told me either luck was with Daren today or he’d pulled some strings. My bet was on the strings.

Daren, my college roommate for two years, had called out of the blue this morning, asking if we could have lunch. He introduced me to the lifestyle I’ve lived for the last five years. Although he’d graduated a year ahead of me, we’d kept in touch through e-mails and the occasional phone call. Until I ran into him last month at a BDSM party, I hadn’t seen him since his graduation day.

My Mentor was always more social than me, so seeing him at a party wasn’t exactly a shock. I just wasn’t aware that he had moved back to Minneapolis. It had been a pleasant surprise.

Sitting down across from my friend, I took the menu from the hostess.

“Kelly will be around to get your drink orders in a minute.”

Thanking her, I set the menu down without looking at it and faced Daren. He was nearly my exact opposite. Where I had brown hair, he had blond. His eyes were a baby blue, whereas mine were a vivid hazel. I was tall and lanky, even though I’d buffed up some since college. Daren, on the other hand, was four inches shorter and could have easily passed as a body builder.
Today he looked nervous, which was rather unusual for him. Not unheard of, but definitely not common either. Needless to say, it piqued my curiosity.

“So do you want to tell me what’s up?”

“I will in a minute,” he said, looking over my shoulder. His behavior gave me a negative feeling. “Do you know what you want, Stephan?”

“Yes. I come here all the time.”

“Good.” He sounded relieved.

And then Kelly was there asking for our orders.

As soon as she left, I raised my eyebrow in question, but he ignored me. “You’re still running the family business, I see.”

“Yes,” I said, not sure what he was getting at. I doubted it had anything to do with why he’d called me. “I’m still head of The Coleman Foundation, but since it’s a not-for-profit, I’m not sure you could say it’s the family business.”

He waved it away. “Same thing.”

I waited, but he didn’t continue so I decided to play along. “You’re still consulting?”

Daren released a sharp breath. “Yeah.” He leaned toward me. “Are you still looking to collar a sub?”

So that’s what this was about? “If I find the right one, yes.” I noticed his shoulders relax, and he sat back a little. “What does that have to do with anything?” I asked, truly confused.

The subject that I did not currently have a submissive came up during our conversation last month at the party. I hadn’t played with anyone in the last six months. No one had struck my fancy, and most of them reminded me too much of Tami.

Daren had been with his submissive, Gina, since college. They were well matched in likes and dislikes and were much more open in their relationship than I personally preferred. I did not share my submissives, nor did I play with others when in a relationship. Many did, like Daren and Gina, but I’d never found it to be appealing. What was mine was mine.

Kelly came back with our drinks, so Daren waited for her to leave again before answering. “Because I found a girl for you.”

“Daren,” I warned, shaking my head. This was another no on my list. I didn’t enjoy being set up. Logan, my best friend, and his girl, Lily, had tried to set me up more times than I could count. I wasn’t interested.

“Hear me out. She needs your help.”

This aroused my curiosity. “What do you mean she needs my help?”

“I know how much you like to help people, Stephan. I mean, look at what you do.”

I was in complete disbelief. “Helping fund medical care for those who can’t afford it is a little different than taking on a submissive. Is she already a trained sub? Is she looking for a Dom?”

“She’s a slave.”

A slave. I didn’t have a problem with that, fundamentally.  It was a complete power exchange. Slaves gave up all control of their lives, their bodies, to their Master or Mistress. Some women, and even some men, choose to be slaves. For most slaves it was a comfort to have someone else make the decisions in their lives for them, to give up complete control to someone else. That didn’t sound like the case here if she needed my help.

“Okay,” I said, drawing out the word, still not quite sure where Daren was going with this.

“I was at a party Saturday night. She was there. Her name is Brianna, and she belongs to Ian Pierce.”

I knew of Ian solely by reputation. I’d never met him personally. He was well-known in the community, but from what I heard, he was into pain and humiliation. And he already had a slave. “What happened to his other one?”

“Oh, she’s still there. Alex was at the party as well. Brianna is a new acquisition.”

“And you don’t think she wants to be?”

“No,” he said firmly. “I don’t.”

“Maybe she’s into what Ian does.”

“Trust me, she’s not,” he said, shaking his head. Then he added, “I wouldn’t have come to you otherwise. And if you had seen her Saturday night, you would know it, too.”

I considered this bit of information. There was no doubt in my mind that Daren believed what he was saying. If this girl didn’t wish to be Ian’s slave, I couldn’t sit by and do nothing. How to help her was the problem. My options were limited.

“What do you want from me exactly? It’s not like I can call the police and have them storm the place just on my word. Or yours for that matter.”

He leaned in again, clasping his hands in front of him, but then had to pull back when our food arrived. Daren took a bite, and then looked me straight in the eye. “I have a collared sub, or I’d do it myself. Plus,” he said with a smirk, “you have more money than I do.”

It was then I got it. “You want me to buy her.” It wasn’t a question, and he didn’t deny it. The thought of “buying” a woman turned my stomach, but if what Daren said was true, I couldn’t just leave her there.

I needed more information and ignored my food as it grew cold on my plate. “What makes you think he’d be willing to part with his property?”

Daren gave me a devilish smile. This was the Dom I knew. He could be quite twisted when he wanted to be. “I asked,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders. “In fact, I told him about you. Said you might be giving him a call.”

“You what?” I nearly shouted. I couldn’t believe he’d told this man I might be interested in anything without talking to me, let alone the purchase of another human being.

Daren looked around us, and I followed his gaze. Everyone in the restaurant was looking at us. That was something we definitely didn’t need, so I lowered my voice to almost a whisper. “Explain.”

“Look, when I saw the girl, I thought of you. She has brown hair and blue eyes. I know how much you like brunettes.”

I scowled, but he ignored me. “She’s really pretty, and scared to death from what I could see,” he said pointedly before continuing. “So I simply asked Ian if he was planning to keep her now that she was fully trained. He asked if I was interested. I told him no, but that I knew of someone who might be.” He shrugged. “I didn’t tell him you’d be looking for a submissive, though, Stephan. If you do this, you’ll have to go in acting like you’re looking for a slave.”

My mind raced. If I did buy her, what would I do with her? What would she be like?

I couldn’t just leave her there that was certain, not if she was there against her will. It just wasn’t in me. If I could help, then I had to.

Could I do what needed to be done? Could I treat a woman like a piece of meat? Buy her?

But how could I not, given the alternative?

“Okay.”
